These fighter planes were part of the Defense Department’s annual commemoration of fallen Air Force personnel. This traditionally takes place on July 1, the day the Air Force was founded. This is done by performing a fly-by in the so-called missing-man formation from Soesterberg Air Base. One aircraft of a group of four F-35s leaves the formation and flies steeply upwards. This is a tribute to the fallen.
